Sitting third on the Women’s Sevens World Series table, there wasn’t much doubt Canada were strong favourites heading into day one of the Sao Paulo 7s, the second stop on the 2014-15 Women’s Sevens World Series.
They delivered.
Led by Ghislaine Landry’s seven tries on the day, Canada knocked off Russia (20-7) and South Africa (26-5) in short order before eclipsing England 24-17 in their final pool match.
Canada finished 3rd overall after day one. They’ll play Russia in the cup quarterfinals on Sunday (5:44 a.m. PT, worldrugby.org).
Landry’s second try against England would prove to be the match winner. It was a moment of individual brilliance.
The whole team performed well, as coach John Tait used most of his lineup freely throughout the three games. Charity Williams, playing her first tournament, had a very notable day, showing quick feet, strong defence and good vision to make an immediate contribution.
Ashley Steacy, captain Jen Kish and Kelly Russell were also hugely impactful.
